Artist Paper

Not only are the brushes and mediums you use a factor in your artwork, the canvas you choose to paint on plays an important role as well.

When using acrylic paints, they tend to dry fairly quickly, so in order to allow for more time to blend the colors and do some shading work, you can dampen the fine art paper you are creating your masterpiece on.

Watercolor paper; machine-made watercolor papers come in three surfaces:

Rough: this paper has a textured surface and creates a grainy effect as pools of water collect in the indentations of the paper.

Hot-pressed or HP: this water color paper has a fine-grained, smooth surface. Paint dries very quickly on this type of paper, which makes it ideal of large, even washes of colors.

Cold-pressed or NOT: this paper has a slightly textured surface, somewhere in between that of the rough and HP paper. This type of paper is the most commonly used one amongst watercolor artists.

Paper Mache is a really fun way to create unique pieces of art and best of all its fairly inexpensive! Start out by ripping several pieces of newspaper into long strips. Let the strips soak in a bowl of warm water overnight.1 Create the following mixture to dip your strips in; Mix one part flour with about 2 parts of water until you get a consistency like thick glue. 1Add more water or flour as necessary. Mix well to get out all the bumps. Add a few tablespoons of salt to help prevent mold from forming! Now blow up a balloon and tie it in a knot. Return to your soggy newspaper strips and place them in the mixture one at a time. Apply your strips so that they completely cover the balloon. Once you've allowed all of the newspaper strips to dry, pop the balloon. You'll be left with a hard, hallow fabrication. Be sure to add some color, beads, fathers, etc to really make this Paper Mache creation truly unique.
